Gut microbes are making news these days. Research has shown that a healthy influx of gut microbes can sustain good immunity, prevent a multitude of diseases including cancers and lengthen our lives. These trillions of "good" bacteria and fungi inhabit the lower end of your digestive tract mostly the colon. We can increase the numbers and quality of microbes by increasing our intake of fibre, lots of fruits and vegetables, minimize processed foods especially cured meats and especially consume fermented foods such as yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut and others. I guess it comes back to that worn out adage of you are what you eat :) Have a great day!
